Catherine Opie (b. Sandusky, OH, 1961; resides in Los Angeles, CA) received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985 and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, in 1988. She is one of the most acclaimed photographers in the United States today, known initially for her tender and straightforward photographs of herself, her friends, and her family within the queer community. Opie investigates the ways in which photographs both document and give voice to social phenomena in America today, registering people’s attitudes and relationships to themselves and others, and the ways in which they occupy the landscape.
