Lesley Low’s series “Useful Life” examines the details of objects and machines— fishing nets, construction equipment, boats and trains— that spend their lives being used for a practical purpose. These objects are often overlooked as mere conveyances. Their vocabulary is the grit, gunk, dust and dirt that clothe them and the scars and wounds that testify to the tough lives they live. Utilizing classic black and white film photography and gelatin silver printing techniques, Low reveals the beauty and texture that use has given these lesser-seen objects.

Low (b. 1971, California; resides in Seattle) is a 2018 graduate of PCNW’s certificate program; she studied mechanical engineering, and oversees fabrication at one of the largest airplane manufacturers in the world.
