“My photo heroes are Eugene Atget, Duane Michals and Ross Chapple. Like my heroes, I strive to capture authentic moments in my work. I use the camera to create a sense of order and elegance. I have always viewed my photography as an act of discovery, a journey to see something I have never seen before.”
Curtis’s photographs carry a painterly luminescence, and express many quiet tensions: institution and individual, light and shadow, positive and negative. Born in Ohio, Mel moved to Seattle in 1984 from Washington DC, where he worked as an art director, before turning to photography full time. Initially a self taught photographer, he received an MFA in Photography from Ohio University, and has taught at the University of Washington and Seattle University as well as PCNW. For over 30 years Mel has been applying his unique and elegant vision to a variety of photographic projects.
