Berger (b. 1948, The Dalles, Oregon; lives in Freeland, WA) has been engaged with the photographic medium since 1965. He earned his BA from UCLA in 1970, studying with Robert Heinecken and Robert Fichter. He worked with Nathan Lyons at the Visual Studies Workshop, completing his MFA there in 1973. He taught at the University of Washington’s School of Art for thirty-five years, having cofounded the school’s photography program in 1978, and initiated a sequence of digital-imaging classes in 1985.
Berger has exhibited nationally and in Europe, including major exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, and Cologne. His retrospective monograph Multiplex was published in 2018 by Minor Matters, and his work is currently on view and for sale at G. Gibson Gallery.
