Ruth Bernhard was born in Berlin in 1905 and studied at the Berlin Academy of Art. After moving to New York in 1927, she began a career in commercial photography. In 1953, Bernhard moved to San Francisco. In a career spanning more than seven decades, she created an imposing body of work. Distinguished by their exquisite use of light, Bernhard’s work can be found in most major museum collections throughout the world.
The Scott Nichols Gallery opened in 1992 and houses an extensive inventory of photographs by classic California photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Wynn Bullock, and William Garnett. Scott Nichols, a Southern California native, has been a private dealer since 1980, and is considered one of the experts on Group f/64.
